Installing Old Hard Drive In New PC (Vista)?
The motherboard of my P4 got fried the other day - 'cause I got no time to wait if and when I will have repaired it etc. I got a new comp with Win Vista (Home Premium)
Now I want to transfer my valuable data from the two hard drives (IDE) of the old one to the new one. The other machine being dead, the only possibility I see is to install the drives directly as add-ons to the new system (it has a SATA thingy drive already), but also an unused IDE connection inside
My questions to the process:
1) is the power connection still the same - can I just connect the two HDDs to the plugs dangling inside the case?
2) will Vista format the drives on detection and if yes, at least give me a chance to at least stop it?
3) any other things I should think about (except for the normal HDD installation routine)
4) Am I getting old, just because I don't trust a new OS? (no answer to this one needed :))
Thanks!
Elex

no as the connection is completely different you can get external hard drive case from good computer shop try putting your hard drive in and connect with a usb port

Simonjoh has given you the answer. Buy a case from any good computer shop, install your hard drive in it and use it as a USB drive. You can then copy all your work across to your new computer. In addition you can then format the USB drive to remove the operating system and programmes, and then use it to back up all your work. If your new computer crashes or has any problems your backup will be safe. If you don't fancy building it up yourself see if a local computer shop will do it for you. Above all learn a lesson from this, always keep a back up. I have copied all my vinyl Lp's (over 2000 tracks. It took weeks and I backed them up immediately it's not worth taking a chance. Hope this helps.

You got a new suite now get a new tie too to look good! To make the old hard drive work to a new computer you need the XP CD to repair the existing installation since the old drive has registry and hardware info from another computer and it won't boot.

1) The SATA power connection is completely different to your IDE connectors, however, you said your new motherboard has an ide connector, so your PSU should have the power to support it!
2) Vista will not do this automatically, it should recognise them though, if not, run Add New Hardware Wizard to install them properly.
3) I think that pretty much covers it!

I don't think the OS Will automatically format the added hard drive

They'll work as IDE drives for storage. Go the the websites of the drive manufacturer and download their installlation utilities.

1. Yes
2. No
3. not that I can think of
4. No your not getting old. New OS's(at least as far as windows is concerned.) are rutinely bug ridden untill a few patches or service pack comes out.
