How do you change the default text colors on a webpage?

When you have a webpage with text on it already (i.e. Freewebs/MySpace), how do you change the text color?

Like if you had a dark background and you couldn't read it?

It's CSS which is much harder in my opinion

And I mean text you have no control over, such as copyrights at the bottom of a page.

If you're editing in HTML you could place <font color="name"> before the text (change the "name" to the color you want). That should probably work.
