How I ask you?

I am currently writing a book, and I feel one of the characters must die. How should I kill him? I thought and thought about it but i couldn't think of anything worthwhile.

Any suggestions?

Have him die saving the hero
that way he wont have died in vain
and the hero doesn't get all the glory
power to the underdog!!

As has already been mentioned, the plot would be useful to know but here's some suggestions anyway.

internal combustion
sucked out of an aircraft
lead poisoning
struck by lightening
electrocuted 
buried alive

Killing off a character never hurt anyone (except for the character maybe).

How about he gets in a head-on collision in his ski mobile with a druggie who's exceeding 50 miles an hour, your man gets killed along with the girl riding with the addict.

Depends on what kind of book your writing, if its a Mystery, or fantasy or romance.

Gun shot
car crash
Character could go missing and then later you could revel that he died 
again it all depends on what kind of book your writing.
