How long after starting to excersise can i start doing weights?

I've been going to the Gym for about a week and a half, and was wondering when i can/should start doing weights? I have about 50 lbs to lose, so i don't want my skin to sag everywhere.

I've already lost 5 lbs!!!!

    Good for you!

I think the main thing to keep in mind is to start with lighter weights so that you get used to the motions before you start to go to heavier weight. If you work with 5-15 lbs, you should be fine to start now. Try to keep your repetitions around 15-20, this will tone your muscles, and make them harder- but not cause bulk.

Most gyms will offer a free session with a trainer, you may want to ask about that. A trainer can also do a body composition test- this is where they break down how much of your weight is muscle and skeleton, and how much is fat- it's a good thing to know when you have a fitness goal in mind.

***Also- any time you excersise- but especially when you lift weights, you are creating muscle- and MUSCLE WEIGHS MORE THAN FAT, so after you start lifting and get on the scale- don't be too dissappointed if your weight loss planes out- look in the mirror and how you fit in your clothes- these are good indications of the changes in your body too.

    good luck!

You should be lifting weights anyways... Strength training increases your metabolism, which helps your body burn fat faster. If you can, while doing your cardio, try incorporating small handweights into your routine. 2-5 lbs until your unable to feel the resistance after a while, then increase the weights slightly. As far as machines, start out with the lowest amount that you can lift/press, but still gives some resisitance. Do as many repetitions as you can until you feel slightly fatigued, then push yourself slightly further. Rest & do that at least 3 or 4 times per side (if it's a one sided machine). Doing lower weights will still give you the strength training & tone your muscles without adding bulk. I do 15-20 minutes of cardio, 20-30 minutes of weights, and then another 15-20 minutes of cardio.

There is no time limit, I would start weight training right away. By building muscle mass you will burn more fat at rest and by toning the muscles your skin will be less likely to have the saggy appearance.
