what is the difference microsoft works and microsoft office?

I look at it this way:

MS Office is MS Works on steroids.

MS Works is MS Office with anemia.

I have both on my system. I generally use Office unless I am trying to match another system or if I am looking for a very simplistic format.

BTW, I have had some problems with the math functions included in the Works Spreadsheet. I'm not sure if it is the software or the idiot operator but I have gone 100% to the Office Spreadsheet and eliminated the trouble.

Folks are correct, Office is more expensive than Works. In my experience, by a factor of four to five times.

What Is Microsoft Works

Most personal computers come with MS Works which is a very scaled down program that has a simple word processor, spreadsheet program, etc. It doesn't have the more advanced application that MS Office has. You can buy software that teaches you how to use Office without having it installed on your computer. There are many books to teach MS Office as well. The difference between Works and Office is huge. You cannot rely on Works to help you with Office. Go to your local bookstore right away.

MS Office is a great program which you will have to purchase. Many places like Office Max, Office Depot, PC Connections, are selling the student version of Office 2003 for about $120. It contains Word and Excel -- the two most common programs you will encounter.

You can get many good, well illustrated books at www.amazon.com. Look for used books. I have saved a bundle on used books and all that I have received so far are in excellent condition.

You will find that programs written for Windows have many comparable commands which helps the learning process.

Microsoft works is the very basic office programs that come with most computers. Most companies use the latest microsoft office software which has a lot more funtions. The cheapest place to buy it is on ebay. They will probably want you to be familiar with excel, word & powerpoint.

MS Works= it's more for someone at home to create banners, type simple letters, resumes, etc.

MS Office= Alot more Money, and it has Powerful Word Program, Spreadsheets, Database, and Power Point and Integration too. For Mostly, the Office User.

Works Suite has a full version of Word in it, I don't know about Works 8, it looks like that is a dumbed down collection of stuff that most PCs have as default anyway. You don't say which version you have. I would say that unless you're writing macros, you could probably get to grip with Word in 10 minutes.

For extra points in your interview, download and install and become familiar with OpenOffice. It's basically an Open Source (free) clone of MS Office, but has the added advantage of conforming to standards like the new OASIS Open Document standard. If you can use OpenOffice with any degree of proficiency, you can use Word.

no, the layout is really only th difference. I mean, if you can type a letter, you can type a letter. if you can make a spreadsheet, you can make a spreadsheet. I prefer Microsoft Works over office anyway.
