I used vinegar and then soak deep with boiling water. The ants are then gone forever. Even the boiling water alone is pretty effective.

It is illegal, I have heard from a friend who heard it from someone else that this works: Slowly trickle a few gallons of gasoline into the nest, wait a few minutes and then, from a safe distance, toss a matchbook onto the nest.
I don't know how you feel about the idea and I never encourage crime, but...

No. To kill any ant mound (colony) you have to kill the queen. She is deep in the ground so unless you a bait type insecticide you are just wasting your time. .

The mound you find in your yard is just the dirt and debris that the ants bring to the surface and it not really a part of the colony. When you use something like salt may stop the ants using mound but they will just move to another location to dump their dirt.

Salt will dehydrate some of the fire ants it won't kill the queen and salt will ruin the ground for the surrounding grass. I use a little bit of amdro it doesn't kill the ants immediately but it will definitely kill the queen if you put a little teaspoon out there and let them carry it into the Queen's chamber
