To What Extent Should Claudius Galen's Writings and Teachings Be Respected by Medical Doctors Today?

Galen was not allowed to dissect human corpses (it was forbidden in Ancient Rome) and his findings were held in such high respect that when Andreas Vesalius (known as the founder of modern human anatomy) chair of surgery at the University of Padua was able disprove them, by examining human specimens (which was permitted by the Church) many refused to accept it.

He accepted the theory of 'the humours' which meant that much medical treatment involved 'balancing the humours' which were believe to govern the human body by bleeding, emetics and laxatives.
