A clever racoon can figure out how to open a door by turning the knob. The far more intelligent human designed and built the door into the "house" and understands the concept of "door". And in fact devised the language in which the word "door" is used in context to describe such a thing.
Intelligence and merely being clever are FAR from the same.

A clever person can score 100% on an exam but may not be able to tie their shoelaces.
An intelligent person won't necessarily score 100% but on the exam can apply that knowledge practically.

Someone that is clever would be someone who comes up with unique ideas or ideas you wouldn't normally think of. Someone who is intelligent would come up with good ideas but they might not really be that different from what you would expect.
