Will you go see the Christmas Star?
On Dec. 21st, Jupiter and Saturn will be so close in the sky, they will appear as a bright star just after sunset. This hasn't happened in 800 years. I plan on going out to see it. Just wondering how many others will do the same. And Happy Holidays to all.

Based on biblical references, that "star" should have arrived sometime in late October.

Thanks for flagging that up. Yes, such a planetary alignment is truly rare, with 3 events in the year leading up to the final, brightest conjunction. Jupiter and Saturn appear to be moving backwards (from our point of view on Earth). Of course, they aren't moving backwards at all, but the ancients noticed the wonder, without benefit of telescopes or cameras, and they knew all about it.
That is why the Magi, after seeing the first one, worked out when the 2nd & 3rd alignments would happen, and set out on an extremely long journey which led to Jerusalem. Not long after that came the 3rd conjunction over Bethlehem's stable, over 2,000 years ago, . That is the significance of that 'star'. Nobody in Bible times knew the difference between stars and planets - they were all called stars (apart from the Sun and the Moon.) That Bethlehem star has been pinned to 7 BCE, when there was also a little-known census of Jewish men, to go to their home towns to swear allegiance to Rome (many priests were noted to have refused to do that). It's truly awesome.

I haven't necessarily made any plans to view the planetary alignment, but if the opportunity to do so presents it's self I most likely will.
