Thoughts on a sailor from the USS Roosevelt dying from COVID-19... Navy is reportedly considering reinstating Captain Crozier?

Update:

For what it's worth, I can understand Capt. Crozier's righteous concern for his sailors' health. As a former AF officer, I can't sanction that he used unsecured communications to try to get the ship help. It was definitely NOT the way to go about it.

That being said, there are increasing reports that Crozier DID try to go through the proper chain-of-command and no one higher up was paying attention.

If that proves to be true, MAYBE he was backed into a corner and saw no other options.

As a former CO, I know from personal experience that sometimes you have to make unfavorable and sporadic decisions that are not always conducive to your first intuition.

As a former GI, I respect Crozier for doing what he did. Probably he went too far in complaints to people outside of his chain of command, but to me his concern for his sailors was commendable and not a sufficient reason for being relieved. There are many levels of military justice, starting with non-judicial discipline (UCMJ Article 15), plus less-formal remedies, such as a letter of reprimand. I don't know what I would have done were I in his position, but if he was "backed into a corner," I'd say he was justified in circumventing the chain of command.

Having said that, he will never be reinstated while Donald Trump is in office, IMO. As we all know, Trump is an insecure narcissist, and Crozier's firing was likely due to Trump being enraged that his COVID-19 message was being undercut. That would certainly explain Modly's profanity-laced rant to the Roosevelt's crew: Trump chewed his butt and Modly--humiliated--went too far in talking about Crozier.

The death of this sailor should not have happened, and I am glad to know that the Navy is considering reinstating Captain Crozier.

That a crewman of the ship died from Covid-19 is not related to the poor judgement on the part of Captain Crozier.  Highly doubtful that he will be re-instated to any command.

It’s tragic like most every other death.
