Rock & Pop: What are the most challenging albums that you've listened to? ?
Rock & Pop, what are the most impenetrable, difficult, etc. albums that you've heard? Here are some of my picks:
Swans - To Be Kind
Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance
Have a Nice Life - Deathconsciousness
Daughters - You Won't Get What You Want
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!
BQ: In your opinion, which band is harder to get into, and why: Swans or Daughters?
BQ2: Do you think that certain genres are automatically difficult?
BQ3: Would you say that certain albums continue to be challenging in 2019?
BQ4: What is the most accessible album, in your collection?

Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box (a.k.a. Second Edition) is pretty challenging on first listen. It's one of my favorites now though.
BQ: Probably Swans because of their more extensive catalog
BQ2: I don't think so. There's always at least one album that resonates with people, even when it comes to more experimental stuff.
BQ3: Not sure. Most of the albums I've heard this year are fairly accessible.
BQ4: Gotta be Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

If the music was that bad I wouldn't have bought it in the first place.

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!!!!
DO NOT GHOST ON US IN ROCK & POP EVER AGAIN. WE NEED YOU.
ok. here we go:
Celtic Frost - Morbid Tales
Herbie Hancock - Anything by him
BQ: I dont know daughters. I like swans first albums tho, Filth/Job ToJob, Body To Body
BQ2: Yes. Going back to Herbie Hancock, golden age American Jazz (Duke Ellington to Miles Davis) is very frustrating to me.
BQ3: Yes but in a different way. Many albums these days are challenging to me in this: this new generation of musicians are great at coming up with shocking and extreme ways to make their music, but beyond thst there isnt much. Its boring and doesnt hold my interest. Because the songs arent songs, they arent catchy.
As of late, there are 3 bands that I like that make great songs and have great (not original but great) ideas.
1. Beneath - an icelandic technical death metal band
2. Eternal Summers - a punk pop band that recalls the Pixies
3. Beirut - an indie rock band that fuses chamber music and baroque pop ( Think Beach Boys when u see that genre named dropped)
BQ4: The Smiths - The Best Of

Off the top of my head, stuff by Captain Beefheart. Like Zappa he made music that can’t always be categorized.
BQ1: Honestly not familiar, I’ll have look on YouTube.
BQ2: Yes. Exposure, especially when young makes a difference. Being older I know what I like but I do like to challenge my ears. 90% of what I have gets no radio play.
BQ3: I hear little of what’s current with rock and pop. Nothing has caught my ear. My tastes are blues oriented.
BQ4: I’m a fan of instrumentals. Of course there are great vocalists but I pay attention more to the music. Try "Unfinished Business" by Danny Gatton. The best guitar player you never heard and plays multiple genres.
