What was the point of getting married?
We're both over 45yrs old. His parents helped us finance our home. Within 24 hours of our marriage, he started disappearing. He would go somewhere and not come home for days. I was so ashamed, and didn't know what to do. I was working 50 mi from home and had a 13yr old son. Thankful I didnt quit my job. I woke up and packed my son and I, and left after about 3 yrs. Why did he want to marry me?

Some people just enjoy the security of marriage. But clearly this person didn't want marriage on the terms you perceive as marriage. So you weren't a good match and you did the right thing by breaking it off. Not sure what advice you're seeking as you've already done what you needed to do.

Adult married men are taken more seriously in our culture. In their communities, in their careers, in nearly every aspect of their lives. Perhaps that figured in somewhere.

No one here can know. We don't know him. Maybe he wanted someone at home to do the domestic stuff. We don't know anything about your life together. Some people don't feel fidelity is necessary. Only be can answer your question.

In your case, no idea. I don't know either one of you, and you didn't list very many details.
In my case, the point was I got her pregnant. Thank you for asking, I guess.

You were his cover story. Sorry but that is ow it comes across. Maybe he wanted citizenship where you are. Whatever it was, it was never his intention to be married in any real sense. That much is obvious.
His disappearances could be explained in many ways.
Maybe he is in love with a woman his parents would never have approved of. Maybe its a man.
Maybe his sexual preferences were stranger still.
Maybe he wanted a cover story for some nefarious activity.

Just a guess, but it might have been
to appease his parents. What amazes
me is that you would marry someone
with whom you could not discuss all
of this, and instead just fled.

I agree entirely, it is an expense to do so, an expense to get divorced as well as all the time and acrimony if the marriage falls apart. If someone is going to cheat or fall out of love a gold band and a shiny certificate isn't going to stop them.
