They were separated, over a period of about 400 years. The time between Nehemiah and the birth of Christ (circa 432 - 5 B.C.) are known as the inter-testamental period.
However, the Old points to the New, and it is therefore impossible to pay attention to one while disregarding the other. The two parts make up the whole.

Of course not! The whole Bible is the word of God.
2 Timothy 3:16 "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness,"

Actually "The Old Testament" was originally titled the Hebrew Bible(Tanakh). It was written approximately 9000 years ago in the Hebrew language. The Roman Empire's Koine Greek text titled "The New Testament" was written less than 2000 years ago. 2 totally separate books, written centuries apart! It was the Roman Catholic King James by authority of the Vatican; altered, edited, reworded, omitted and added words/scriptures to the Hebrew Bible. Then the Roman Catholic Empire~The Vatican~renamed "their version" of The Hebrew Bible to "The Old Testament". Printing presses had been introduced to England during the reign of King James. It was King James who was 1st to print the Vatican's version of the "Holy Bible". This was done so the masses (people) could posess & read "The Bible" for themselves & read it in their homes. Luckily, today The Tanakh is available in The Hebrew & English Version. Easy to read & understand. Complete scriptures & verses. Written plain & simple.

The O.T [Hebrew/Aramaic] Scriptures and the N.T [Christian Geek] Scriptures, have always been kept in two parts making it easier for ones unfamiliar with the Bible to distinguish between where the one ends and the other starts.

They are, into the Old Testament and the New Testament
and the dividing point is Christ on the Cross
Somethings are carried into the New From The Old
Like the definition of sin and what is to be avoided
Other things such as observance of the law is not

They already are. The Christians say that the OT doesn't count anymore.
