Why do people likes to get the latest phones?
I have a Galaxy s5 and it still works. No cracks, and it takes great pictures! I don't understand why people would want a new phone? They are getting more expensive!

From where I am, its a status symbol. The newer your phone, the higher you pee (old Filipino expression).
Not everyone agrees though and most of the time, it's those few people who can truly afford those really expensive top of the line cutting edge technology phones who cling on to their outdated models.
Me, I'm just on my fourth phone in almost 30 years. The first I had to replace because my carrier dropped their analog service without prior notice. The second and third had to go because the phone company kept upgrading "G's" to the detriment of my old phones' signal. Luckily, my mom asked me to buy her a classy (meaning expensive) phone to show off (that she could actually buy one). Once it served its purpose, she dumped it preferring her old button type phones (she has three). Luck has struck me twice since my youngest son, the most techie in the family, didn't want it telling although it was impressive to look at, it didn't have a gyroscope. A wha...? Mine then.

I only got a new phone (went from the s6 to the s8) because my son changed carriers (he pays for my phone). I actually preferred my s6 and wish I had gotten an s6 instead of a s8.

1)People like new and shiny things
2) the newest Samsung or Apple phone is a bit of a status symbol that is why so many of the iPhone cases have the power girl window so people will know you spent too much on your last phone.
3) many of the apps no longer work on older phones like Pokemon Go no longer works on iPhone 5
4) not enough memory I have not seen a Galaxy 5 likely the best phone Samsung ever made except it does not have 32 gb internal memory which seems to have become the minimum needed to be able to use your smartphone as a smartphone.
5) their old phone is breaks out and the repair sometimes even with insurance or accident plan with copay exceeds the value of the phone
6) As much as like to have the most advanced phones, I am finding ones that sell from $300 to $600 that do what I need and especially if I stay with Project Fi and Google continues to not sell insurance that covers theft and loss, I am unlikely to pay over $300 for a smartphone that I can only get and accident plan with,
7) the possibility that the latest phone will take the longest to become obsolete

Conspicuous consumption - if you can afford the latest phone it signals your economic status. Is that a dumb reason to get a new phone? Yes.
Other people enjoy new gadgets, others build applications for them and want/need the latest hardware to test on.

So they can stay relevant for longer.
I always buy the latest phone... but then I keep it for five years or more.
Lots of people do the same... but they’ll do it the next year or a few years down the road.
My first smartphone was an iPhone 4 I bought in 2010. I still have it as a kids phone.
Then... after the 4S, 5, 5S, and 6 came out (with NO changes according to the critics) I got a 6S... which was light years ahead of my 4. Now I’ve had it for three years... I’ll give it another two before replacing it.

Sometime they want to be first at top of everything. Like new shoes wanna first one who got it in school.
Me nooo, I just avoid waste money. I get new one when old one not work anymore.

It's a status symbol. I never really understood it to be honest. I still have my I-phone 5C and it works great still.

I have an iphone 4. It has some good features, but many newer apps don't work. I also have a Nokia 3. The Nokia drops wifi on a regular basis which is annoying, but I can use the latest apps. The iphone has the best podcast app and it is free to text family who have iphones. Both phones are PAYG so I have mobile data turned off. The battery is way better on the Nokia. I have both because the iphone was given to me after someone upgraded. The Nokia I have because my last phone was a Nokia and I could transfer all of my contacts and number easily.
I don't buy into getting the latest phone, but maybe it is because I was around before mobiles were common.
