Why is there no international break in rugby 🏉 union?
I have often asked rugby union fans this question and none have been able to give me an answer. So, why in rugby union is there no international break, as there is on football for example. You often find teams such as Harlequins play premiership matches on the same day England play at Twickenham and could be using say 4-5 of their fist team players.....

Because the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere can't agree on a singular global calendar, and in the case of the NH, you have two different club comps going on simultaneously (European comps in addition to domestic comps and cup comps in ENG, FRA, Celtic Nations, etc.) along with the 6 Nations and your fall international test matches. The clubs and the national federations can't agree on anything, so instead of having carve-outs you have an asinine number of games being played. ENG's club comp is a 22 game season plus play-offs. Tack on another 10 games for the European Cup, a half-dozen cup games, up to 8 test matches in the fall/6N season (before you get to summer SH tours, World Cups or Lions Tours) and you're easily looking at 45 games potentially over a 10-11 month season.
League at least has a single calendar; the NH/SH seasons run Feb/Mar through October with International breaks carved out around this. It means that the NRL plays through winter in AUS but ENG/FRA/CAN start in the winter, play through spring/summer and finish early autumn.
