However, I do think it's extraordinarily sh*tty for CNN to say they reserve the right to release his name. That's super super lame. Should they be allowed to track him down? Yes. Detective work has never been against the law, the man put enough personal identifying information in his posts to be found in real life. Should they be allowed to threaten him with exposure unless he complies with their wishes? No, that's extortion in my book. Should a huge news organization waste time and energy tracking down some 2-bit memester who made a shitty gif just because the president retweeted it? No, no they should not.
