Dual port ethernet to speed up local transfers?

If i order a network card that has a 1gbps capability, and it has 2 ports, what is the point of 2 ports.

I will be using the card for home network transfers between computers. If i connect both ports into my router will i get 2gbps into the machine??

    Assuming the router has 1 Gbps (not gbps - G for Giga not g, which is the acceleration due to gravity), then if your PC can actually handle data at speeds of over 1 Gbps, then it can be made to work to another PC on the same network. Dual Ethernet to provide a connection over the Internet will not work unless you have a commercial ISP connection and router rather than a normal home set up.

    To transfer files as a single stream using two separate Ethernet connections requires software on both machines to bond the two Ethernets. However, it is relatively easy to have a primary network, that connects various computers and possibly provides access to the Internet. Then have a second network for data transfers with other computers. The two Ethernets can theoretically each be transferring unrelated data at speeds approaching 1 Gbps. If you are transferring large files between HDDs, then the HDD transfer speed might be the limiting factor.

    If you have two or more physical drives in a computer, you might try copying files from one drive to another. If the files copy at only 120 MBps (MegaBytes/second) or less, then multiple Ethernet connections may not offer any improvement. A 1 Gbps Ethernet might transfer a 7 GigaByte file in around 1 minute.

    You should assess your requirements and the capabilities of your computer and understand the software required to bond multiple network paths before spending money of hardware you might not be able to use.

    I hope this helps.

    I doubt that it will work or is economical for a home PC;

    People use two ports to connect to two separate networks for various reasons. You can't get 2gbps by just hooking up both ports in a typical home setup, but it technically is possible with the right equipment (with port teaming\Link aggregation).
