How to Speed up transfer speeds over wifi!?
I have re purposed an old laptop that i had and made it into a fully working home server. I have it directly plugged into my router via ethernet giving it 100mpbs due to an old network card. I stream movies, pictures and TV shows off of it to home theatres, pcs, ipads, and 4k tvs around the house. Wifi is definitely holding back performance. I cannot stream 4k over wifi! When transferring files to my server it takes time as well. Over wifi my local connection speed is 144mbps and it is bottlenecking the transfer at 100mbps becuase of the old network card in the server. When i go ethernet i have a 1gbps local speed. Assuming i change the network card to a better one to support gigbit ethernet, will i be able to achieve gigabit speeds over wifi or will i have to stick with ethernet?

How are you measuring your speeds? I assume you mean 100 Mbps over Ethernet. 100 mbps (millibits/second) means 10 seconds to transfer each bit.
WiFi at a connection speed of 144 Mbps, probably will offer transfer speeds of between 25 and 50 Mbps. Ethernet at 100 Mbps can offer transfer speeds of around 85 Mbps.
WiFi is a shared half duplex (two way alternate) connection. There also have to be periods when the WiFi channel is idle and there will be occasions where two WiFi devices start transmitting at the same time causing a collision. When a collision occurs, both packets are corrupted but neither sender detects that there has been a collision. There is a delay before higher level recovery protocols send the lost packets again.
In contrast, Ethernet cables can carry data and acknowledgement packets is opposite directions at the same time. The cable is a dedicated connection so there are no clashes with other transfers. Devices such as the router manage the flow of data so that lost or corrupted packets do not occur and recovery is unnecessary.
If you want to improve WiFi speeds, consider 5 GHz operation and 802.11ac routers and network adapters. Finally, to get the best speeds, use a separate WiFi network for each different device all working on separate 5 GHz channels.
I hope this helps.
