Do bone scans give accurate body height predictions?

Hi,

when I was 13 or 14 my doctor predicted from my hand bones that I'll eventually be 5'7" (1,70m). Now I'm 16 and only 5'2". I'm really depressed because I feel this height is restricting me in many ways and I hope I will grow taller. I do swimming and all that stuff. So do you think bone scans give roughly accurate body height predictions?

Never heard of using bone scans, usually the growth plates are viewed to see if they are still wide open or starting to close. But not a doctor, so may be appropriate. But no doctor should say how tall you will be specifically, there is frankly no way anyone can know what your final height will be,

No they don't. Your hands and arms, feet and legs are the first to grow longer. That "gangly teenager" thing.

A bone scan, particularly of your legs, can only tell you if your epiphyseal plates (growth plates) at the ends of the bones are closed or not. They will tell you if you are still growing but not how tall you will be. No one, not even your doctor can predict with any degree of accuracy how tall you will be. Height is determined by genetics. The genes you received from your parents, grandparents and even further back in your ancestry. Also genes for height can skip generation making it very difficult to know how tall you will be. If you have an X-ray of you leg now it will tell you if you can grow more. The fact that you are 5ft. 2in. at age 16 does not indicate you will reach that 5ft 7in the doctor predicted. If your mom or dad are short then it is possible you will be as well. I do understand how important height is to you, now at your age, it was for me as well. Later on it becomes much less important than the man you turn out to be, your character, who you are. One distinct advantage to being shorter is you will likely never have any back problems in your lifetime, like more guys as tall as 5ft 10in and taller have. It is all a matter of leverage.
