Is it okay for both sides to lie, or only one?

We are currently having the marriage equality debate in Australia, leading to a possible plebiscite. One Anglican archbishop said, "Marriage between a man and a woman was ordained by God." How are ordinary Australians going to be able to weigh the arguments if one side is allowed to lie like this?

The open expression of ideas permits lies to be exposed and truth to be said. If you are concern that untruth will prevail over truth than you have an objection to plebecites and should seek an alternative. Stifling free speech is not a good idea.

  • If both sides are tired they both need to lie down.

The worse lie is that homosexuals aren't allowed to marry, or that it's not legal for them to marry. Straight-out lie.

At least with religious nutters, we know they're religious nutters.

What's the marriage equality movement's excuse?

Neither side should lie. The archbishop is neither right or wrong and he is stating what he believes. It is not, however, a fact.
