So I have been dancing for 8 years now and I have only been involved in recitals since I started when I was 31 and I thought this was the only option. Well I was at a bbq over the weekend and a classmate of mine told me that the competition they went to has a 25+ category. I didn't know that and now I am wondering if I should approach my teacher about maybe trying to be in the comp in some fashion, a small group, duo/trio, I think I would hold off on asking about a solo until the following year when it will be my tenth year of dance. What I want to know is, would you do it if you were in my place? If you want to see how well I dance (in order to help you make up your mind), here is a link to last year's dance. I don't have this year's dvd yet. Remember it was the first year of adult jazz so the choreography is a bit simple. I start center stage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF4MSHNc15I
Good point, however I would have to wait until next spring to attend the comp. While I do go to a comp school now, they only participate in one at the end of the year. Of course I would ask for harder choreography, I know it's about being flashy and doing tricks. That dance had a lot of newbies in it (or hadn't danced in YEARS). I do know that our studio owner prefers simple and clean to flashy and sloppy.
So I honestly don't know the extent of choreographic depth that she has yet. I've only been here two years now. Yes, I would be doing it for the experience and for the fun of it. I don't expect to take home the crown or anything. I appreciate the compliment that I am better than this. I do know that, and that is one reason I changed schools.
I didn't feel like I could learn more from the first one. While I do have to dance at the skill level of the other students in class, I am the big fish in the little pond. All the girls in class would turn to me to ask what they were doing wrong, instead of asking the teacher and she said that teaching the others was a great way for me to make sure I knew the dance inside out and she even asked me a few clarifying ?s at times.
I think I will broach the subject with her, at the min, I can ask if the info I got was correct and if she what she thought about the skill level of the competitors at that level.
Spoke to my teacher and she said that unless it's the pro/am category that she is pretty sure they did away with the 25+ group due to lack of people signing up. I contacted the comp directly and asked them about the age group and am waiting to her back from him.

I suggest you attend one of these competitions to see what the 25+ category looks like. It may be dancers who have been doing competition dance their whole lives. It may even be the teachers participating.
In any event if you decide you want to give it a go just for the fun of it, you would have to step up the choreography by a whole lot as this looks like something that even a non dancer could do. I know from other things you have posted that you are capable of a lot more than this. This type of choreography won't do in competitions as they look for tricks that show off the dancer's prowess. Your teacher may not be capable of that kind of choreography either.
First step is attend the competition to see what is what. Perhaps your teacher/choreographer could go with you so you both can make a good assessment of the possibilities. Competitions are not cheap and that may be an issue for your school as well as other dancers who may want to participate.
Edit: you may be able to see a video of the competitions from previous years to give you a better idea so you won't have to wait until next spring.
