What Is Show Quality Dog?

What she really means is "show potential". There are no disqualifying flaws and the pup may have the proper temperament to be a show dog. Pups that are show potential are usually sold with full breeding rights or a co-own with the breeder with strict language in the contract about showing and health testing prior to breeding. A show potential pup that does well in the show ring as a youth and a young adult means that the pups are bred true to the type (conformation) of the breed.

Show quality means the dog has the bone structure and coat to be shown in a dog show and win.

Pet quality means the dogs are not up to the breed standard, in some way they're the wrong size, have the wrong coloring or too long a nose, too short or long a body/legs, or there's something else just not up to 100% for the breed's look. Even wrong eye color or wrong nose color can be a fault. Also, genetically a pet quality dog is able to pass on the defect, so they're not used for breeding.

Our Siamese cat is pet quality. She has three white blotches on the back of her right ear (it's supposed to be all chocolate color), her eyes are slightly crossed (a bad fault in the breed) and her head isn't as wedge shaped as the show standard required (it's too rounded in the cheeks). Is she a Siamese? Yes. Is she a great cat? Yes. Will I ever show her? No. She's spayed, she's ours, and she'll live up to 20 years as our house cat if we're lucky.

Show quality means that they conform closely enough to the breed standard that they could compete in dog shows in conformation and get their championships. BUT - no real breeder would EVER allow a show prospect to waste its potential in any pet home. Real breeders only place their show puppies in show homes, so there's no way these dogs are show quality.

So you bought a pair of MUTTS from a BYBer. No real breeder would have sold you tow puppies. You bought ill bred worthless mutts from a BYBer that lied to you.

Show quality dogs are correct (enough) in conformation, color/markings and coat according to their breed's standards. Pet quality dogs have one or more "flaws" that make them unsuitable for the show ring, but perfectly fine for pets.

Edit to your update: Breeders of champion stock want their (show quality) dogs shown to promote their lines. Therefore, they sell them to "show homes" (people that will show them). A pet home is someone that is not going to show the dog. .

I dont believe what the breeder told you. No good breeder would sell you two puppies at the same time,. or sell show quality pups to a pet home.

Also some pups are ugly ducklings. The term 'show quality' is like a health certificate, it only applies to the pup at the point of sale.

Unless this is a show breeder, and you are buying with a show contract, you are not buying show quality.
