Why do mergers scare employees?

What is about this that gets employees nervous? It seems to have really bad effect on a company's morale - esp. if there's been lots of layoffs

    When two companies merge they usually each have their own accounting, purchasing, marketing departments, most mergers combine these functions and instead of each firm having 4 accounting people, the new company has 5 in a central location,
