Would you recommend a steel roof over shingles.?

Question

My roof needs replaced the underlay is good I just keep replacing shingles as need but it is getting to the point where it is hard to keep up.

What is a reasonable cost to do it ?

The ridge line is 42 ft and the distance from the edge to the ridge is 16' 9"

Best offer so far is $5,000 for felt underlayment and replacing the gutters with new seamless ones.

Any day of the week and twice on Sunday I recommend a steel roof over asphalt shingles. I just purchased a 25 x 40 awning for $5000 installed so your quote is reasonable. They hold up great in all weather including winds of well in excess of 100mph.

i recently replaced my old dry cracking and brittle 20 year old shingle roof with r panel... this shall not rust and has made my house cooler... galvanized steel absorbs the heat while the r panel does not... i wish i had spent a little more the first time... this shall be the last one i ever buy...

i would recommend removing the shingles before laying down the metal roof

I agree with you on this.....a homeowner continues to replace shingles all of the time.
A steel roof will last for a life-time....a bit more expensive but worth it.  I see where others have stated they are noisy.............easy fix - lay a layer of foam panels down before laying the steel.

you have to consider if the roof can take the weight of shingles and the steel roof on top of them. Roof trusses are made to bear the weight of only one layer od tiles, shingles, or whatever. The roof wont show this increase of weight at first but later you may notice signs of the roof sagging slightly.

The steel roofs rust ! Forget what the manufacture says nobody really knows how to install them right so there goes any warranty !

We did the math and found the steel was more expensive but looking around the neighborhood we noticed after a few years they began to fade.  We went with an upgraded architectural asphalt shingle, higher grade than the typical shingle.  Hopefully it will out live us.

Nice thing bout the steel roof is its probably the last roof you'll put on.
