Your employer needs to see your Social Security Card so they can make a copy of it for records and to validate that it is your actual social security number and not a random number you thought of or someone else's number.

You might be able to tell your employer that you do not have the card now but will be able to provide it when it comes to you.

I know for the job I was just hired into they required it be provided within 1-3 days of starting so you may still have time

No, YOU do need a social security card to make sure taxes are taken out of the and put into the correct retirement account

Yes, all you have to do is show him the paperwork where you applied for a lost card and show it to him when ti arrives in about 10 day. Give him your SS number so he can get your employment paperwork filled out and show him your card as soon as it arrives

Bring them the piece of paper also. Technically, for the I-9, you need your license and either the piece of paper or a birth certificate from the U.S, but some employers don't know the rules If you were not born in the U.S., then also bring your naturalization papers or visa or U.S. passport or other proof that you are eligible to work in the U.S.

    You don't need the card.

For tax purposes, you need the number (but you don't have to show anything with it, if you have it memorized).

For the form proving that you aren't an illegal alien or anything like that, you need proof of your identity (such as a license) and proof that you are a citizen or otherwise eligible to work in the country (your birth certificate, if from the U.S., and the piece of paper from social security, is enough).

You don't need a SS card. Look at the list of accepted documents on Form I-9 (linked below) - list is on page 9.

If you have a passport, that will work just fine. Or a driver's license and birth certificate.

They will need to either see the card or another form of ID as identified on the I9 to allow you to work. It is illegal for them to just assume the 9 numbers you give them is actually correct.

take the letter showing you ordered it and your number and see if they will accept it.
