Is it a helpful security measure to scratch off CVV?

My credit card has a CVV printed right on the back. If I memorize the number (or maybe even write it down), then scratch off the code, would it be a helpful safeguard against someone copying down my digits at a restaurant, then using it online?

    You might have trouble using it in stores if you do that because sometimes they use it to verify that the card is legit.
