Hebrew question: What is the difference between Tet and Tav?

How to find out when to use it in a word. Are there any rules about it. Feel I get mad about this :)

    Hi Medusa,

In Hebrew, you have two "t" sounds : ט (in Hebrew the name of the letter is טֵית) and ת (in Hebrew the name of the letter is תָּו).

    1) The letter ט

Technically, the linguists say that this letter is an emphatic "t".

    2) The letter ת

Technically, the linguists say that this letter is the equivalent of the English "th", but the pronounciation can be either explosive or softened.

    a) When there is a daguesh qal inside the letter תּ the "t" has an explosive pronounciation.

    b) When there is nothing inside the letter ת has a softened pronounciation.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm French. My Hebrew teachers told me that substantially we didn't make the difference at the level of the pronunciation for a Frenchman.

When we write a word, how to know if it is a teth or a tav? I fear that there are no specific rules, everything depends on the word, on its spelling.

    Yours
