Does race matter or not?

Question

My entire life I've been told it doesn't matter beyond the fact some people get shot for being a certain skin color, and that we should work to make it so its not even that.

Now people are telling me that an entire's person's identity is based off their skin color, that children can only relate to fictional characters of the same skin color and that I'm racist for thinking the former.

Can someone, without attacking me or anyone, please explain what the heck is going on? Am I missing something here?

Yes race matters, but only to an extent. Race is more than skin colour. Look at different parts of the world and you will see that there is difference in their way of thinking and how they live. It is taboo to talk about race these days but race does matter.
