Pay Comprehensive Deductible to Mechanic?

Question

I need a door repaired after a break in to my car. People keep telling me to find a mechanic who will let me slide on the $100 deductible. Is this a common practice, is it legal? I want a good job done and I m willing to pay for good work but so many people are gonna hold it over my head if I pay. What should I do?

say the bill comes to 1000 dollars the deductible of 100 is paid to us then insurance picks up the 900. all depends on the shop. and what needs to be done to the door. if body work involved then a body shop will need to do that usually not a regular mechanic

The shop/mechanic submits an invoice to the insurance company.  They pay the invoice amount, less the deductible, and the customer pays the amount of the deductible directly to the shop.  Technically, not collecting the deductible is fraud, because they are submitting a false invoice to the insurance company.  That said, the insurance companies actually steer customers to shops that 'waive' the deductible.  The only one being lied to is the customer.

Insurance deductibles are paid to the insurance company, not the mechanic, or body shop. The insurance company pays the mechanic once that mechanic or shop has submitted his invoice. The insurance company may ask that mechanic for an estimate before the start of work and that's normal.

It's worth going to a good shop to have a good job done and stop telling other people about your business. It's your money, your life, not theirs.
