Why do some theists get so angry and resort to insults when they're disagreed with?

In fairness that often works both ways, but I'll let Bertrand Russell answer your question.

I agree that getting angry and resorting to insults is a sign of poor character. It happens with both atheists and theists. You're not immune just because you have a particular set of beliefs, or lack thereof.

However, considering your second question:

Isn't it kind of selfish to not care? Why wouldn't you want others to know about what you know is the truth?

I actually generally appreciate it when others share their beliefs with me, because it means they care enough about me that they want me to know the truth too.

A lot of people who disagree on a deeply emotional topic simply go straight to attacks on a person instead of attacks on an idea. Simply called John stupid does not point out the flaws in his argument, but it does make people pause and think, "well maybe he is stupid."

People of all types turn to insults only when their arguments fail to make their points. That's why you see so many insulting and mocking atheists here.

Theists are often angry because they know they're wrong.

Lol I know right. People they have never met that are not involved in their Life all across the other side of the world(Potentialy) seem to have such a great effect of their mood. I think the internet is not for them.
