Why is it, when I looked online for my city's sunrise and sunset times, the day that had twelve hours of sunlight was March 16th?

Is this because of our position on the planet? And what place do they use to decide when the equinox arrives?

Update:

Or is there some other reason entirely that the our actual equinox is 5 days away from what my calendar says?
