Why politics don't abolish the Electoral College to replace it with direct elections? Could be more fare!?
With the electoral college, "small" candidates almost don't exist and someone can be elected President with less popular vote than his opponent (in George W Bush won but Al Gore earned 500,000 popular votes more than him!). Using "direct elections" (one man, one vote) like in most countries of the world could be more democratic, so why don't the politics change the current unfair system?
bush / gore was in 2000

The minority corporate-colluding rightwing hidden-agenda Republicans would do exactly what they are busy doing now in the southern states: voter suppression, gerrymandering, stuffing the ballot boxes with Nathan Sproul-gathered "registrations" that turn out to be dead people listed as Republicans, or faking "absentee" ballots as a last-ditch effort to stuff the ballot boxes in favor of the unpopular fiscally insane GOP.
With the electoral college, there is at least a chance at fairness.

The electoral college is designed to give greater representation to regional/rural areas as opposed to weighting the vote in favor of larger cities.
