Notice period when there's no tenancy agreement? U.K.?

Question

I've been living in a property for 3 years with a live-in landlord. Never had a tenancy agreement and always paid cash in hand on a monthly basis. I now want to move somewhere proper and was wondering about my notice. I don't want to give a month. I'll be damned if my landlord protected my deposit at all and he has never shown a gas certificate either so it's not been the best. I want to give him two weeks notice at best. Is that possible?

If you live with your landlord you are a lodger not a tenant. The good news is that that means you do not have to give him a month's notice, the bad news is that he does not have to protect your deposit or show you a gas certificate.

Great, thanks. That sounds like the worst type of agreement for me. I'm glad to be moving somewhere I can have a contract.
