How can I start a conversation with an unknown person without just saying "hi, how are you"?

"Wow, it barely feels like winter this year! I can't wait for it to snow! (after their input/reaction) Oh my name is _____ by the way. How were your holidays?" And you can continue like that.

I actually started a conversation with a stranger this way so it should work. I don't know where you live and if it snowed yet because here in New York it's still unseasonably warm. It's usually around 20 degrees by now but for some reason it's been 50 and up. =/

You can alter my suggestion with whatever your weather is like in your area. Or you can open up with a compliment like "Hey, I really like your coat!" or something.

Comment on something that's going on around you - like "hey, it's really icy out there" or "Man, this assembly is boring".

Comment on something that may happen in the future - like "Did you hear about the festival downtown this weekend? Are you going?" or "What are you doing over spring break?"

Make a joke

Ask them if they understood the math homework

Ask if you can borrow a pen

Remember that they are just a person. Don't put people on such a high pedestal that you feel afraid to talk to them.

Lol what? Do you want me to hold me to hold your hand through your love life or something? You're speaking to just another person, there doesn't have to be some elaborate scheme behind it, say whatever you want.

walk up and tell them your name and ask for theirs than you can tell them what you like to do such as what are your favorites bands or music.
