Nirvana vs. Stone Temple Pilots?!?

Personally STP because Nirvana always seems to get the nod. Also because as crazy as he was Scott Weiland (I always forget how to spell his last name) was a genius, even though he probably shouldbe six feet under because of all his recreational activities. With songs like Interstate Love Song and Plush you cant go wrong. But with influence both STP and Nirvana are tied, they both did wonders for the industry and are arguably two of the greatest bands to come out of the late 80s early 90s. Maybe not necessarily from a music standpoint but influence all around, I mean Cobain has been dead for over 20 years and hes still talked about, even though hes a pariah in some peoples minds. Also what STP was able to do especially with all the drugs going on within the band. Weiland even being alive is a miracle within its self. His overdose in what 95ish should have killed 6 people let alone one. They are both influential in their own right. Irs just who you like more. No answer is wrong.

Nirvana. Why? They changed the trajectory of rock music. It was all glam. Nirvana came on to the scene and it was all grunge (sure only for about five minutes). But Nirvana set the framework for what alternative rock would be for the next 20 years. I am not overly familiar with STP work, so this answer is slightly biased but Nirvana's music (and their tragically romantic history) left a huge legacy that has influenced a whole range of artists. Is there any commercial rock album better than Nevermind? In Utero after 20 years still remains one of the greatest albums of all time. Unplugged was beautiful. (takes a breath).

In terms of influence and style? By far Nirvana. I've never really heard anybody talk about STP being significantly influential. I've always seen them as the beginning of the "copycat" Grunge bands. That's not to say that they are bad by any means, their first two albums are excellent, but Nirvana wins this both in terms of better music and influence.

I wouldn't pick either, but I will anyway and choose Stone Temple Pilots. I find their music is better lyric wise.

I agree about Kurt being brilliant but STP is a better band musically. Scott Weiland is a talented singer. Nobody likes it nowadays though. Chester Bennington isn't respected in that band.

Nirvana definitely...STP is good but Nirvana is on a whole different level...Kurt Cobain was a genius songwriter too...

STP ... the only musically good thing about Nirvana was Dave Grohl.
