I only read a limited number of novels in translation, as when you read translations, you're most often reading the translator, not the author. Having read a fair amount of Chekov's short stories, because Hemingway idolized him, I began to wonder just how much of Hemingway's ultimate style was influenced by the blunt nature of the translations of these stories.

Outside of the sagas and some epic poetry, there are only a handful of authors I find worth reading. Milan Kundera is one as he writes mostly of ideas, so you care little about the prose. Autobiographies are an exception as well, because they're more historical documents than they are "literature."

I've dabbled with the "great" Russians, as well as various popular novels, but other than an occasional novelty, I find that most are not worth reading. One Scandinavian mystery novel is worthwhile, three are merely tedious. One German, first-person bildungsroman is fascinating, but a second is unnecessary.

I love the myths and legends from Norway. Those are my favorite.
