How is not having children selfish?
Honest question to how that is, in any capacity, a selfish act. I can't make sense of the assertion.
I mean, if someone doesn't feel like they are capable of successfully raising a child, why would you want them to do it anyway? To me, that seems like it would do a lot more harm than good for both the parent(s) and child/ren, and it's not like we have a shortage of children in the world or anything.
Can someone please explain to me the reasoning behind saying it is selfish?

I guess you could say that doing anything for yourself is selfish. So both having a child because you want one and not having a child because you don't want one would be selfish. But you need to be selfish in life sometime. You have to do what's best for you.
But I don't think anyone really believes that you are being selfish by not having kids. If they say that it's just to justify their own decision to have kids.

It's not. Heck I'm 20 and I don't want kids because they are a lot harder than a puppy I would assume. Children cry at 4am while puppies usually don't and some kids are so selfish. I don't have kids and I hope I don't.

I don't think it's selfish at all. It's selfish to bring a child into the world knowing full and well you can't raise it. Plus the world already has an overpopulation issue anyway no use adding to it.

It isn't. That's just something elitist and overzealous parents say to fuel their egos. Not wanting to have children is not in any way selfish. On the contrary, I would say if one isn't fit to raise children but wants them anyway then that is pretty selfish.

That is what not-so-intelligent people think.I face the same situations and people drive me crazy.Thank god theres people like you with sane minds.I think that having children without having the money and time to raise and educate them properly is selfish....you literally fix YOUR unhappiness by having children.And not having children is selfish....please.

not having children is not selfish at all, you would be selfish if you had a child and werent ready to raise it

It isn't. The species needs someone to procreate, but that does not seem to be a current problem.
A bigger problem is the damage to the Earth from so many of our species.

yes i think so you have eggs in your body they wernt put there to just sit there forever untill you die then die with you you were born your mom did not decide to not have you did she? No so if these are your plans you are very selfish and a very nasty person.

Because the person is focusing more on themselves instead of sharing their life with a child.
