Brighton or London?

I'll be doing a gap year before uni and I want to ameliorate my english. Therefore I decided to spent some time aboard, specifically in England. Now of all the options I've narrowed it down to these two beautiful cities. I've heard lots of Brighton, specially that it has a lot to offer for young people. But london has so much more cultural things to enjoy. What I'm most anxious about London is that it might be to stressful, and right now that's the least I want. And my (my mums actually) biggest contra argument for Brighton is that where I live (Germany) some people have never heard about Brighton, hence on my CV it will only cause a "meh" whereas London will always be a "wow" (I hope this just didn't sounds really superficial and stupid.)

I just want an amazing, chill but exciting gap year. I hope to be able to meet a lot of locals and feel one with the city. I don't want anything too stressful or feel alienated.

At the moment I'm more leaning towards Brighton, but I need to be fully sure to convince my mum.

Thanks for your time and help.

Brighton has a great scene for young people; universities, language education etc.. It is also quite arty - music, paintings, a good museum. Plenty of nightlife in the pubs with folk music and so on. Plenty of organised events. A big gay scene. I find London less friendly where some locations have weird atmospheres due to unemployment and social discontent.

London is very good, but expensive. Brighon is not that much cheaper though.. However, a lot of people regard Brighton as "London-on-sea". The train on a good day with minimal stops can take as little as 45 minutes so you can always visit. The main plus for Brighton is the nightlife is incerdible and it's always relatively near. There's a slightly better night lif in London but you have al ot more travel to get to clubs, etc.

Quelle(n): Lived in Brighton and London, 15 years in Brighton (inclusing 2 yesrs a as a university student) and so far 17 in London.but still visited Brighton regualrly until 5 years ago when my parents moved out of Brighton.

You are right. London is a fabulous city. However, it's very expensive. Finding accommodation you can afford will be hard. It's not unfriendly but it can be quite hard to make good friends.

Brighton is cheaper and more obviously friendly. It's not far from London. It's a bit like London's seaside!

Personally, I prefer Bournemouth. It's more laid-back than Brighton and has beautiful beaches. There is plenty of nightlife and it's home to a university and a lot of language schools. It's further from London but there is a good rail link.

Choose Brighton. You can visit London as often as you like. There are 3 trains per hour from Brighton to London Victoria taking less than 1 hour.

I would suggest Brighton. London is great, but more expensive and it is hard to meet locals in the centre. Brighton is smaller, a bit less expensive, has a large student population and is only between an hour and an hour 34 by train to London, so you could do a bit of both.

Brighton is dead during the winter. London is busy all year round.
