Why do African Americans tend to be so homophobic?

Honest, serious question, no offense

intended. I am European (straight btw) but I have lived in the US for some time and I don t get this. I understand that some black folks tend to be more conservative and more religious than white Americans and might therefore

dislike gay people but many Latinos are also pretty religious and yet, they seem more easy-going about gay people.

In fact, I've made some experiences where black people in my opinion - tooootally overreacted. One of these

experiences was this:

One time during a trip through the US I was in a public bathroom. The only other person in there was a black guy that I knew a little bit from that trip. When I was already standing at sink, washing my hands, the guy started to casually chat with me while he was still peeing at the urinal. Because I had been addressed, I did what to me seemed natural and

polite and what I would have done with any other guy, also back in Europe: I turned around to face him (from the side), in order to look into his eyes when talking to him. Totally unexpectedly, his mood suddenly changed completely and he freaked out on me. He screamed at me "hey, what s wrong with bro? What are you looking at my c***??? Are you a fa**ot or what??" I got scared and abruptly left the bathroom.

There are also pranks on youtube where a guy goes to the "hood" and asks black people if they want "some d**k. It's just a silly joke, yet many of them totally freak out about merely being asked that. Why is that?

Update:

*what's wrong with you bro

I think African American culture has stricter gender roles than other cultures, and masculinity in particular is sort of more extreme. Like black men seem very concerned with how they are perceived relative to their maleness. Which is a big part of why anyone is phobic. There're afraid of being seen as sissies and gay by association.

You publicly threatened his masculinity. If you think a white Southerner would be more restrained, you're kidding yourself. It's a machismo thing. In my experience, it doesn't run deep in private and AA aren't more homophobic than average. It's a front.

We admire and place high value on masculinity and aggressiveness. Those traits are not optional-- they are mandatory to survive a less than ideal childhood. Being seen as weak often leads to victimization and being targeted. "Gay" is seen as emasculation so it's not good news to enter puberty as a gay black male. Your first thought might be, "Oh my god. Black AND gay? I'm doomed." If you're black & gay it's best to leave the community or hide.

Also many of our churches do not speak up for tolerance--- quite the opposite in fact. Honestly I think black gay women have it even worse. Why? Because she's a woman.

Quelle(n): If one feels all he has left is his masculinity & gay is seen as weak--- what do you expect?

I know right!!! It's crazy... but I think you answered your own question.

Most straight black people are just that homophobic, and who knows if the closeted ones pretend to be extremely homophobic too... that would be even crazier.

I live in progressive New York City; the vast majority of black people are openly and unabashedly homophobic. It always confounds me how a demographic who is hyperconcerned about its civil liberties emy embrace such profound bigotry towards others.
