What is righteousness?
Is it striving to do the right thing?
I guess you might consider the possibility that your viewpoint of righteousness might be wrong, and later on, you might find new information that makes you think the opposite point of view is right.
Or is it obeying the will of God, no matter how evil that might seem to you?
And obviously, how do we determine what God's will is? Rely only on the Bible? Rely on the thoughts of the Church Fathers too?
I thought my question was clear, but obviously it was not. I wonder about the two ways of defining righteousness. One is to do what seems right, and one is to adhere to some legal code, no matter whether you think it is good or bad, simply because it's written that you must.
<sigh> Nobody reads anymore.

Righteousness. The apostle Paul seems to make a distinction between goodness and righteousness when, speaking of Christ’s sacrificial death, he says: “For hardly will anyone die for a righteous man; indeed, for the good man, perhaps, someone even dares to die. But God recommends his own love to us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Ro 5:7, 8)
A man can be termed “righteous” if he fulfills his proper obligations, is just, impartial, honest, not guilty of wrongdoing or immorality, hence one known for integrity of conduct and uprightness. He is not merely concerned with doing what justice requires but goes beyond this, being motivated by wholesome consideration for others and the desire to benefit and help them.—Compare Mt 12:35; 20:10-15; Lu 6:9, 33, 35, 36; Joh 7:12; Ac 14:17; Ro 12:20, 21; 1Th 5:15.
Hope this helps
Thanks

interiorized sharing in divine justice and partaking of divine nature by adoption and manifested by life, behaviors and treatment of others and developed by will and action
if my actions are not in accord with God's commandments and moral teachings as revealed in inspired Scripture in Tradition in the authoritative Church then they are not channeling God's righteousness ( dikaiosune, sedekah and mishpat)as shown also by Natural Law /Reason

To be righteous, one needs to follow in Jesus' footsteps as closely as an imperfect person can. Then to worship the true God and not to pick and choose what scriptures you want to! For instance worshipping the true God: Biblical proofs:
The Divine Name :
Should we pronounce or use God’s personal name of Jehovah? History indicates that, in time, the Jewish people developed a superstitious attitude toward God’s name, viewing it as something that they should not pronounce. (Ex. 20:7)
Bible scholars acknowledge that God’s personal name, as represented by the Tetragrammaton , appears almost 7,000 times in the original text of the Hebrew Scriptures. Below are a few examples.
Exodus 6:3 “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.”
Isa. 12:12 “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is my salvation.”
Isa. 26:4 “Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting
Strength”
John 1: 18 No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
Jesus was seem but according to this scripture no one (no man) has EVER SEEN God. So far one would be tempted to agree that God is not Jesus then.
Exodus 23:13 "Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods; do not let them be heard on your lips.
For centuries, scholars thought that the Tetragrammaton was absent from manuscripts of he Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Scriptures. Then, in the mid-20th century, some very old fragments of the Greek Septuagint version that existed in Jesus’ day were brought to the attention of scholars. Those fragments contain the personal name of God, written in Hebrew characters. So in Jesus’ day, copies of the Scriptures in Greek did contain the divine name.
“Jehovah" occurs 6712 times in 5,720 verses in the Darby Bible:
Jeremiah 16:21 “ “So I will make them know, At this time I will make them know my power and my might, And they will have to know that my name is Jehovah.”
King James Bible
That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
Holman Christian Standard Bible
“ That they may they know that You alone-- whose name is Yahweh-- are the Most High over all the earth.”
Aramaic Bible in Plain English
“And they shall know that your Name is Lord Jehovah; you alone are exalted in all the Earth! “
New World Translation
“May people know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.”
Romans 10:13 “ For “everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved . However, how will they call on him if they have not put faith in him? How, in turn, will they put faith in him about whom they have not heard? How, in turn, will they hear without someone to preach? How, in turn, will they preach unless they have been sent out? Just as it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who declare good news of good things!”
