Random orbit floor sander for unfinished floor?
I'll be putting down unfinished oak flooring in a 10x20 room. Having never sanded a floor before I would prefer to use a random orbit floor sander as opposed to a drum/belt sander as they seem more forgiving. Has anyone done this or is the orbital not cut out for unfinished floors?

This is a job best left to a professional. Orbital sanders will not produce a good finish on oak flooring. A drum/belt sander is what must be used. But you have to be very careful with them. If you stop in one spot for a second or 2 you can put a gouge in the floor that you can't get out.

If you haven't sanded a floor before you should hire someone for this, an experienced pro. If you are going to do it yourself rent or buy a good belt sander. They take a little longer than drum sanders, but they are more forgiving than drum sanders. Just be sure to always sand with the grain and keep the sander moving. Never stop moving the machine with the belt turning.

Using an orbital sander only will have you sanding your floor well past the next presidential election. It is best to go over it once with a belt sander, and finish it off with an orbital sander if you want a really fine finish. Random orbital sanders are designed for finishing furniture, not floors. Unless you are doing a floor for the Queen of England, or Saddam Hussein........

Orbital sanders come in v e r y handy and provide a great finish, d u e to their random movements and seamless edges and what’s great is that they are fairly inexpensive, compared to some of the tools out there nowadays.
The first orbital sander I am going to be looking at is the M i k i t a 5 inch random orbital sander kit that provides smooth and even sanding without getting all of those swirls that can sometimes appear.

that is the wrong sander and it would take forever to get good results
if you can't afford to get it professionally done at least rent the right equipment
back in the day before electric sanders they used to hand scrape floors to get them smooth
