When I open a window in full screen it covers my 'workbar' how do I undo this.?

yesterday some stuff on my desk fell onto my keyboard at 1st nothing seemed out of the ordinary but I just realized that when a I put a window into full-screen mode it covers the bar at the bottom of my screen that let's me quickly jump from open programs, adjust the volume, check the time, ect. can anyone tell which key or series of keys I need to hit to get things back to how they were.

Normally you press the F11 key to toggle in and out of full screen mode.

While in full screen mode, you can switch to other programs by holding the Alt key and then pressing the Tab key. Each press on the tab key switches to the next program.

I have tested this on Windows 8.1 and on Windows XP, but I believe most recent versions of Windows have the same features.
