lane splitting... yes or no?

Then time has come to end lane splitting in CA, especially in the HOV entrance and exit zones. I have written the Gov and both my reps telling them to get with Senator Beall to come up with another bill that makes lane splitting illegal especially in these short entrance/exit HOV zones. Motorcycles split lanes 30+ mph faster than the cars who need to get out of these HOV lanes. Motorcycles have little respect for the vehicle with the signal on for 500 feet trying to make a life-changing decision to get into and out of the HOV lane. Cars are not cages. They are cars. Al lot of them are used for work purposes and it is not illegal to drive one. I've seen some motorcycle forums. Motorcyclists are just plain not nice for the most part. Sharing the road is a two-way street, literally. I have wide-angle bubbles on the mirrors and can see everything---except the obnoxious lane-splitter doing 60 when I'm stuck going 35 trying to get out of the HOV lane. Split the lanes safely and I'll stop writing the letters to my reps in the state legislature.

Some states allow lane splitting provided traffic isn't moving, the road is straight and flat (can't be done on curves or hills) and there no large vehicles in the lane. This allows cyclist not to be hindered by congested traffic jams. However in most states its illegal.

If we want the 3 foot clearance law enforced we can't put ourselves in situations where traffic could suddenly start moving again and endanger us.

    you know..

    cars are all stopped

you are in the right lane but you need to get in the left lane

should you ride between the stopped cars to get over to the left?

i have never really heard anyone talk about whether it is legal, not legal, whatever...

    i know the risks

a car could change lanes, open a door, etc

    ignore all that

    is it legal everywhere, anywhere?

You have to look up your local ordinance to determine legality. Now I can only say, use common sense before trying it and keep your eyes peeled. I have done it, and not had problems. Some communities allow it, other do not. That keeping the eyes peeled and using common sense thing only goes so far, I have been hit 3 times by motorists all their fault, luckily only seriously injured once. Be careful out there
