Where to place oar locks?
This may sound incredibly dumb, but how do you know where to put the oar lock on the oar. These are the oar locks that clamp on to the oar. Should they be 15 inches, for example, from the oar grip? Is there some type of formula? Or do you just go with whatever feels right? Any suggestions or guidance is appreciated by this boating rookie. Thanks.

they should normally go into their positions in the Gunwhale of the boat ( the reinforced hole in the top edge of the hull ) so that the inner ( grip ) ends of the oars are 3 inches apart . This is to stop you mashing your thumbs together when rowing , as proper sailors will have their thumbs on the end of the oars , not wrapped around the grips .
However , you will see many illustrations which show boats in which the oars actually overlapping ; - technically , this is superior as it adds leverage , but is only for the expert oarsman as novices are sure to crush their hands doing this .
