What is the best Isaac Asimov book?

He's one of my favourite authors, but (like many of his contemporaries) most of his fiction hasn't aged well. Consider the opening of his novel The Caves of Steel (often regarded as the first sci-fi detective novel) where, in a budget-constrained future New York, the police department has to use robots for the menial jobs. The hero is sitting at his desk when a robot approaches to tell him the boss wants to see him. So apparently they can afford robots but not telephones. They don't even have radios in their squad cars.

He was possibly better at short stories than novels, so you might be better off with one of his short story collections. Nightfall is widely regarded as his best short story - sometimes even the best science fiction short story ever - so if you want to go down that route, I'd look for a collection with that one in.

I think his best novel is The Gods Themselves. It's not connected to any of his other stories, though that's really only a problem if you like it so much that you want to read more of his work. One significant difference between it and his other stories is that it features intelligent aliens; in most of his other work, humans are the only intelligent species.

The Foundation Trilogy are my favorite novels but I have to agree with Ioerr's answer above about Nightfall, that really is one of my favorite short stories. Try looking for a collection of his short stories to read, if you like those, then try the Foundation trilogy.

He was a famous sf writer but I didn't actually like him as much as some of the others. I mainly liked to read his non fiction books. He wrote a ton of them. He had a short story called Nightfall that really liked a lot though
