What form does a salaried employee fill out? W-4 or 1099?

Just curious, If someone fills out a 1099 then they are not officially an employee of a business, but rather a self employee individual that hires them self out.

But talking with other people yesterday just made me wonder, as it got confusing for me... (this is not my specialty at all) does a salaried employee still fill out a W-4?

A salaried employee never gets a Form 1099-MISC. A Form 1099-MISC is used by a business to report certain payments to certain independent contractors who are not corporations. The person receiving the funds never fills out a 1099-MISC.

If a business pays an independent contractor more than $600 in the calendar year for services rendered or more than $5,000 for goods for resale they are required to provide the contractor with a completed Form 1099-MISC and send a copy to the IRS. Reporting for lesser amounts is optional.

A salaried employee's income is ONLY reported on Form W-2. End of discussion.

As a salaried employee with an employer that will withhold all of the required tax the employee would fill out the IRS form W-4 form when starting to work at this new job Employee withholding Allowance Certificate for the purpose of the FIT withholding out of the Gross pay for each pay period during that tax year.

And after the end of that tax year during the tax filing season for that past tax year the employer would send out a W-2 form with the Gross wages reported in the Box 1 and the FIT $$ amount in the Box 2 to be used as a TAX CREDIT amount on the correct line of the 1040 FIT return and a possible REFUND amount when the Box 2 amount would be MORE than your FIT liability would be at that time during that tax filing season for that past tax year.

Hope that you find the above enclosed information useful. 04/25/2014

The person who is an independent contractor does not fill out a 1099. The 1099 is a form that is completed by the company to report the amounts paid to the independent contractor.

    Employees complete Form W-4.

The contractor completes Form W-9 to provide EIN, address and so on.

An employee fills out a W-4 and gets a W-2 from their employer at the end of the yer.

An independent contractor fills out a W-9, and if that client pays them over $600, should get a 1099misc at the end of the year.

    a salaried employee will complete a W-4

if you are a contract employee you will sign a contract which of course will include your SSN because you will be issued a 1099 when the contract is fulfilled

It is counter-intuitive that a salaried employee would also be self-employed.
