Okay, so in terms of talking and speaking, you need about 4000-6000 words which is the basic amount of words you learn in primary, depending on where you go. Knowing this much vocab will make you 'fluent' enough to communicate normally, however you need 10000+ words for lets say, a chinese teacher or professor :) if youre trying to talk like a normal native, then i'd say 6000+ words.

just keep memorising your word banks and find a buddy to practice with. talk with that buddy in chinese greetings, say hello, goodbye, good morning, good night, the more you talk the faster you learn! don't be discouraged if you forget or if it is hard, if you don't give up you will be able to speak chinese fluently!

    good luck :-)

Quelle(n): chinese speaker myself, currently trying to learn french and korean ^^

    None. No characters at all.

You only need to know characters to read and write Chinese, not speak and understand it.

    Translation:

« Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den »

In a stone den was a poet called Shi, who was a lion addict, and had resolved to eat ten lions.

He often went to the market to look for lions.

At ten o'clock, ten lions had just arrived at the market.

At that time, Shi had just arrived at the market.

He saw those ten lions, and using his trusty arrows, caused the ten lions to die.

He brought the corpses of the ten lions to the stone den.

The stone den was damp. He asked his servants to wipe it.

After the stone den was wiped, he tried to eat those ten lions.

When he ate, he realized that these ten lions were in fact ten stone lion corpses.

    Try to explain this matter.

The above poem is a 92-character modern poem written in Classical Chinese by Yuen Ren Chao (1892–1982), in which every syllable has the sound shi (in different tones) when read in modern Mandarin Chinese. It is a famous example of constrained writing.
