SENIOR NEED COLLEGE GRANTS & LOANS?
I'm a 68 year old male and in perfect health. I was in drug rehab for 9 months and have been clean and sober for two years. My careers went down the drain with by former lifestyle. I am trying to rebuild my life at this time. I receive 700.00 a month from Social Security. I live with a family and pay 400.00 a month for a bedroom which in not conducive for studying as a college student. I am a former certified teacher and licensed funeral director. I just got bot state licenses back and wish to continue as a freelance funeral director. I cannot afford a car with and get by with a bike or have a friend drive me. I want to attend a local community college and take some refreshing courses such as Anatomy, Speech, and a Computer course. I would like to receive as much money in forms of grants and loans to get my own apartment auto, and life back together. I am willing to be a full time student and do whatever is necessary to get the grants and loans. Without a van, I am paying others to do the pick up and transfers of bodies, which I could do with a van. I offer funeral services at a very discounted price and work with many charities to bury indigent people. An input of cash as a student would help me get on my feet and be a productive part of my community. How may I go about getting the funds to go back to school, get my own place, and buy a van? Any and all answers appreciated.

At 68, is it wise to get into debt in any manner? If you think your life is pretty financially barren now, wait until you have loans you have to pay off on top of that. You ought to see if any funeral homes around your area will hire you so you can make a steadier income, and then look into evening classes in the subjects you want. See if the schools have any senior people discounts. See if they let you audit classes for free. Look around at the churches and hospitals and every other kind of organization to see if they have free (or very cheap) programs for senior citizens--you might be able to find a very cheap computer course that way since people think senior citizens are computer-stupid still. See if the local charities have any programs you may be interested in. I'd avoid getting grants or loans at this point in life; maybe a scholarship would be ok, but anything where you'd have to pay back the funds is putting too much of an onus on you and you'd have no way of ever paying it off yet the creditors would constantly be on your back to do so--not a good way to spend your years. See if the government has any scholarships for senior citizens who want to go back to school. You can also contact companies who sell thing more specifically for elderly people because they sometimes have scholarship funds that almost no one knows about (but they have the grants or scholarships because they are business tax deductions); it may mean you have to fill out lots of papers and go for an interview but that's easy enough.
