Do you think this is the end?

Of the black box. I certainly hope so.

Update:

I hope so because this is the second time (at least) that it's proved to be absolutely useless. An automatic signal, sent from the outside of the plane every five minutes, would be far more helpful.

You are spot on - a lot of people think that the so-called black box should be sending out a continuous signal to be received and recorded by communications satellites of which there are hundreds.

Think many in the flying business will start to think so and demand that this be done.

How much easier it would have been had the black box on the plane been sending signals which could easily have been monitored and thus it's location pinpointed via satellite to within a few square yards.

The other strange thing is that if the plane had ditched, which now seems likely, then what happened to the signal bouys which would have been automatically launched?

There is one thing people should be aware of and that is ditching in the sea is no easy matter. It's like hitting concrete and if there are big waves, which seems likely, then the plane and it's passengers are not going to survive.

aircraft have a long service life, so when something new comes along the older craft don't have it, its the way it is. Black boxes have served the aircraft industry very well indeed, just because one of them might be unrecoverable isn't a reason to totally get your knickers in a twist about shareholders. I suppose people spend their cars to be fitted with all the latest safety devices every 6 months do they? No thought not.

This answerer ponders why the asker hopes so ? Its called orange actually and has all the final data of a crashed plane. There will always be similar technology what ever its called.

It is useful more often than not.

    No reason to scrap it.
