Is home school a good idea?

I'm 14 years old, currently in year 9. My education and grades have never been a problem for me as I've always remained at the top of my classes. I am considering home school for multiple reasons. One being that I recently changed school and I'm learning all the topics that I've already done. I also don't feel as though I am learning as much as I could.

I want to know how it all works.

How much does it cost?

How do I take exams like GCSE?

Do I need a tutor?

Everything I would need to know, basically.

Anything you can tell me about home schooling would be great.

Thank you.

Q How much does it cost?

As much or as little as you and your parents want to spend. You could join an online school such as Inter HIgh or the British E-School for around £3,000 a year; you can buy everything you need from a distance education company for around £400 per subject; or you can do it yourself for next to nothing using a ibrary card and free internet resources, etc.

    Q. How do I take exams like GCSE?

You can take IGCSEs as a private candidate. However each exam will cost your parents aroud £100 and depending where you live you may have to travel to another part of the country to sit the exams (meaning more expense).

    Q. Do I need a tutor?

No. Only if you want a tutor.

The one thing you do need is willing parents. You must have your parents' agreement and permission because only they can pull you out of school. Similarly, being home educated (the UK name for 'homeschool') means your parents taking on complete responsibility, incl. financial, for educating you themselves outside of the school system. If you can get your mum to agree to home education then it's a simple case of her writing a letter to your current school telling them to take your name off the school register. And that's all there is to it.

Once you're officially home eductaed you can pretty much do anything you and your parents agree on. You no longer have to do the same stuff as kids in school do (you can choose to do that, but, if you want to do something different, that's ok too). The ONLY rule for home educated kids is that your parents must provide you with "a suitable full-time education that is appropriate to your age, abilities and aptitudes". However none of that has ever been officially defined so there's a lot of freedom there to do your own thing. At home, your education can look as much, or as little, like school as you and your parents want to make it.

The online schools in Heatherstar's post are American. Some British online schools are :

    Inter hIgh : http://www.interhigh.co.uk/

    First College : http://www.firstcollege.co.uk/

    The British E-school : http://www.briteschool.co.uk/

Incidentally, there is no such thing as a free online school in the UK, only private schools. Even the ones in Heatherstar's post are only free in some parts of the US, not all.

Since you've been in public school all this time online school would probably be a good option. Some to google are ECOT, K-12, and connestions academy. They are all free and it differs about GCSEs and no you probably don't need a tutor. Their websites should have phone numbers and email addresses for you to contact with all of your questions.
